Thrift stores aren’t only useful when shopping for vintage styles — you can also use thrift shops to create trendy, new looks. In this episode of ITK: Thrift Talk, our host and thrifting expert, Siena Filippi (@simply.siena), introduces us to the “blokette” trend, an emerging style that emphasizes the juxtaposition of sporty and feminine elements.

According to Siena, blokette is “technically a mix of bloke, which is a British word for dude, and coquette, has that feminine touch.” She adds, “I love mixing masculine and feminine in my personal style.”

Shopping at Other People’s Clothes in Queens, Siena divides her shopping into two sections: One for the sporty part of the look and one for the girly elements. She starts by looking for sporty features, prioritizing pieces with zip-up constructions. Siena’s first pick is a white jacket that she finds to be both sporty and girly. Next, she hits the men’s section, where she finds a soccer jersey that is both athletic and British — perfect for a blokette look.

Siena then looks for bottoms, preferably some track pants. She grabs a pair exactly like what she’s looking for, featuring stripes and breakaway snap buttons down each side.

To bring in some more feminine elements to the look, Siena returns to the women’s section to look for something with lace. She finds a white, button-front top with a Peter Pan collar and lace trim. While the piece is out of her comfort zone, it adds a nice contrast to the look. To complement the soccer top, Siena needs a girly skirt. She finds this in the form of a white slip midi style.

Finally, Siena grabs a pair of shoes to finish out the look. She picks a pair of leather Mary Jane wedges that she says provides the last girly touch the look needs.

Siena hits the dressing room to weed out pieces that don’t work. She immediately realizes the soccer top and slip skirt don’t look good together, so she tries out the track pants and lace top combo. The lace top is a much better match with a structured fit that contrasts against the loose-fitting track pants.

“So basically, I’m pretty impressed and I feel like I should keep thrifting for blokette core,” Siena says.
